Mary Ellen Hartman, 81, of Alpena passed away December 31, 2022, at Medilodge of Alpena from Alzheimer’s disease, having been officially diagnosed in the fall of 2020.
Mary was born in Alpena on October 30, 1941, to the late Arthur Henry and late Florence (Berry) Henry. Mary grew up in Presque Isle on East Grand Lake Boulevard, and graduated from Alpena Catholic Central High School in 1959. She married Gary John Hartman on July 11, 1959.
Mary was a stay-at-home mom for the first 13 years of her marriage, having given birth to three kids between 1960 and 1964. Over the years she attended hundreds of football, hockey, figure skating, baseball, softball, track and other athletic events in which her three kids had participated.
Mary was an accomplished cosmetologist, having trained and graduated from the Alpena Hollywood School of Beauty in 1972. She worked as a cosmetologist for the Figure Head in Alpena for many years, followed by 15 years as the salon manager at J. C. Penney’s Hair Salon in the Alpena Mall. Although slow to gain haircut acceptance initially by her kids, they soon sought her out for haircuts after learning that haircuts cost money!
Mary was an avid cross-country skier and skater. Like her husband Gary she loved music immensely; and loved to sing, but only at church or in the shower (to avoid complaints). She attended hundreds of performances by her husband Gary in the City Band, Alpena Civic Theater, Besser Chorus, and City Orchestra. She was a dedicated member of Trinity Episcopal Church for approximately 55 years.
Mary was a great cook, and could fabricate a fantastic “new” dinner out of days of leftovers. For example: Beef roast on Monday, leftover beef roast on Tuesday, beef stroganoff on Wednesday, beef goulash on Thursday, and fish on Friday! Mary was also an avid reader; enjoyed knitting, sewing, and chrocheting; and loved watching the sun set from their lake house deck on the Long Lake Narrows. Mary and her husband Gary were snowbirds for much of their last couple of decades, wintering in sunny Bonita Springs, FL (less than an hour from the Everglades).
Surviving are her three children: Kevin J. (Sally) Hartman, Kathy (Del) Ferris, and Karl Hartman; six grandchildren: Geoffrey, Genna, Gordon, Derek, Travis, and John Hartman; step grand-daughter Jessica (Kevin) Szott; three great-grandchildren; sibling William (Diane) Henry; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hartman was preceded in death by her husband Gary on 6/23/22, who died as a result of an accidental trip and mechanical fall at the Oakland Hunt Club; her older sister Sally Henry; and her older brothers: Patrick, Kenneth, and James Henry.
Memorial visitation will take place Friday, January 13, 2023, at Bannan Funeral Home from 1PM until the memorial service at 4PM with Rev. Bruce Michaud officiating.
