Mark Beins

Mark J. Beins, 73, of Alpena, died unexpectedly May 11, 2021. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sue Hayes. Donation has taken place. No services will be held at this time.

Mark had a master of fine arts degree in drawing from Wayne State University, Detroit. He taught in schools in Ohio, including Bowling Green State University, the Toledo Museum of Art, and in Michigan, at Wayne State University, Pontiac Center for the Arts, the College for Creative Studies, Detroit, and Kirtland Community College, Roscommon, besides tutoring private students.

The award-winning artist has artwork in collections in Ohio, Florida, North Dakota, Alaska, Las Vegas, Nevada, California, Saudi Arabia and Guam.

In industry, he directed the graphics department at a Toledo, Ohio, trade show display company, supervising graphic production of large exhibits for national and international clients and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In addition he served in the U.S. National Guard for 4 years.

He and Sue moved to Alpena in 2002 where she managed JoAnn Fabrics and he was the financial aid technician for Alpena Community College from 2003-2012.

In the community, Mark was a member of the Northeast Michigan Artist Guild. He assisted the Island Park and Wildlife Sanctuary with recruiting artists for the annual artist in residence summer program and helped create the first Magic in Our Midst holiday offering.At the Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan, he had one- and two-man exhibitions, organized art shows, taught art, and ran the planetarium for several years.

Mark is survived by stepdaughter Jeanne (Chad) Weible; stepson Jeffrey (Lisa) Hayes; grandchildren, Megan (Travis) Beckett, Emma Reichelderfer, Andrew Reichelderfer, William Hayes and Julian Hayes; and great-grandchildren, Oliver and Sawyer Beckett. Also surviving are brothers Craig (Darlene) and Bernard (Linda) Beins; sisters, Mary Alice Beins and Dee (Kelly) Carew; and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, William and Gladys Beins, brother William and sister Judy preceded him in death.
