Charles Welbaum

Charles Arthur Welbaum, 95, of Alpena passed away Sunday, January 17, 2021 at his home.

Charles was born in Allen County, Indiana on December 4, 1925 to the late Harrison and Faye (Hiser) Welbaum. He proudly served in the United States Army both in Panama as military police and in the Aluetian Islands, Alaska during the World War II conflict as a Battalion Gunner on “Attu”. After his discharge in 1947, Charles met the love of his life on a blind date. He and Venita Standish were married at the United Methodist Church in Harbor Springs, Michigan on September 27, 1947. Charles and Venita resided in Fort Wayne, Indiana upon their marriage until moving to Alpena in 1955, where Charles took a Power Lineman A position with the Alpena Power Company. Charles retired from Alpena Power in 1990.

Preceding him in death were his wife of 69 years, Venita and a son, Charles Gordon Welbaum; sisters, Mary Benz and Geraldine Lartz; brother, Clyde Welbaum; and stepbrother, Bob Farling.

Surviving are a daughter, Diane (Edward) LaBell of Long Lake; daughter-in-law, Dorothy (Alan) Boyk of Alpena; 6 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.

Charles greatly enjoyed Northern Michigan hunting and fishing, Long Lake living, as well as following professional football and golf competitions.

Cremation arrangements are being handled by the Bannan Funeral Home in Alpena. Private family services to take place at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Michigan.
