Bernard R. Lamp Jr., 91, of Alpena passed away Monday, April 11, 2022,
at his home.
Bernie was born April 11, 1931, in Alpena to the late Bernard and Miriam (Thorne) Lamp. He graduated from St. Bernard High School in 1949. He attended GMI (General Motors Institute) from 1950-1952 while working at Garrison Chevrolet in Alpena. From October 1952 to September 1954, he served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Bernie joined his brother-in-law, Russ Townsend Jr. at R.A. Townsend Company in 1955, and retired in 2019 after working for the company for 64 years. On May 5, 1956, he married Mary Jane Roznowski and they raised four children. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, gardening, and spending time with family at their camp in Lachine.
Bernie was a life-long member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and was a member of the Men’s Club and Ushers Club. He joined the Alpena Lions Club in 1956 and was a member for over 65 years, having served as past president. His father was a charter member of the local chapter in 1926 and his son and grandson are now third and fourth generation members of the Alpena Lions Club. He was a life member recipient and received the Melvin Jones Fellow award. He was active in Lions projects raising money by selling mints, white canes, or Old Newsboy papers, walking the July 4 parade or clean-up projects at Sytek Park. Bernie was chair of the local eyeglass program and processed over 2,500 pair of used eyeglasses each year for distribution to third world countries.
Surviving is his wife of 65 years, Mary Jane; children, Bernard (Nancy) Lamp, Michael (Mary) Lamp, Louanne (Jeff) Holmes, Maureen (Harry) Stevens; grandchildren, Katie, Laura, Andy, Mary, Justin, Stephanie, Kaitlyn; great grandchildren, Jane, Maya, Cameron, Brady, Ellyn, Hannah, Harper; and sister, Shirley McDonald.
Bernie was preceded in death by his grandson, Eric Holmes; siblings, Mary Ann (Russ) Townsend and Robert (Jane) Lamp.
Visitation will take place Monday, April 18, 2022, at Bannan Funeral Home from 2-8 p.m. with the Rosary at 3 p.m., Military Honors at 5 p.m. by Alpena VFW Post 2496, and Parish Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday at St. Bernard Church of All Saints Parish from 10 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with Archbishop Paul Russell officiating.
Interment: Holy Cross Cemetery
