Russell Ambrose Townsend, Jr.

September 21, 1929 ~ December 21, 2018 (age 89)

Russell Ambrose Townsend, Jr., 89, of Alpena passed away on Friday, December 21 at Turning Brook.

Russ was born on September 21, 1929 in Alpena to the late Russell Sr. and Flora (St. Onge) Townsend. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Lamp, on June 19, 1950 at St. Bernard Catholic Church. She preceded him in death on May 25, 2017.

Russ was a long-time business leader in the Alpena community. He took over the Townsend Coal Company from his father in 1947 and later started the R. A. Townsend Company wholesale business in 1962 with his brother-in-law, Bernard Lamp, Jr. He was a founding member of Target 2000 and was active in promoting the Alpena area. He was honored as an Alpena Community College Fellow in 1999 and inducted into the Alpena Sports Hall of Fame that same year. He was also selected as the Alpena Chamber of Commerce’s Outstanding Citizen in 2005.

Surviving are his nine children—Thomas (Jena) Townsend, Colleen (Don) Marceau, Christine (Hans) Stevens, Mary Beth (Kevin) Englund, Jim (Amy) Townsend, Jane (Randy) Styma, Therese (Toby) Shaw, Amy (Alan) Guest and Paul (Bill Grimmer) Townsend; his 29 grandchildren—Ryan, Sara, Anne, Eric, Tim, Ben, Elissa, Kristin, Jon, Stacey, Emily, Mike, Julie, Erin, Dan, Maria, Tania, Jeremy, Matt, Angie, Alex, Matthew, Ashley, Jim, Peter, Joe, Matthew, Acacia and Piper; and his 20 great-grandchildren—Micah, Zoey, Abigail, Samantha, Elijah, Austin, Grace, Logan, Sophia, Lola, Julian, Addison, Henry, Owen, Kolbie, Cash, Rocky, Gray, Locke and Creed. He is also survived by Bernard (Mary Jane) Lamp, Jr. and Shirley McDonald.

Russ was preceded in death by his sister, Therese Fitzpatrick, brothers-in-law Robert McDonald and Robert Lamp, and sister-in-law Jane Lamp.

Visitation will be held at Bannan Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 26, from 3-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday at St. Bernard Church of All Saints Parish from 10 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with Rev. Scott Lawler officiating.
