Obituary

Robert Arthur Hahn (Bob), 64, died on Christmas Day after a very brief illness. Bob was born on January 25, 1955 in Lansing, Michigan to Arthur E. and Jacqueline Jean (Donald) Hahn.

Bob’s family moved to Alpena in 1967 to be closer to extended family. Bob graduated from Alpena High School in 1973 and attended Alpena Community College. He worked at the Huron Portland Cement Plant from 1973 to 1983 before enlisting in the Navy for six years. He was stationed at the Point Mugu Naval Air Station in California.

At Point Mugu he was an air crewman working on the Navy’s P-3 Orion surveillance aircraft. He was also part of the support mission for NASA’s Space Shuttle Discovery.

After leaving the Navy in 1989, he returned briefly to Alpena. In the fall of 1989, he moved to Maryland where he worked as a civilian Engineering Technician in the Air Vehicle Modification and Instrumentation Division at the Patuxent River Naval Air Test Center. He was proud of his work installing flight test instrumentation and avionics on the F/A-18 E and F Super Hornet aircraft and as an Instrumentation Operations Engineer on the F/A-18 E4 Spin Aircraft.

Bob retired in 2007 after 18 years with the Federal Government. During his time with the Navy and as a civilian contractor, Bob was a well-respected and highly accomplished aircraft instrumentation engineering specialist, receiving many awards, certifications, and commendations.  He held high-level security clearances as part of his duties and assignments. Bob was very proud of his time and service in the Department of Defense, both as a member of the military and as a civilian.

Bob returned home to Alpena in 2009, moving back into the house where he grew up. In his retirement, he enjoyed working with his friend at Great Lakes Fire and Safety, spending time at the family farm tinkering with tractors and being out at his pole barn doing various projects. His most prized possession was his 1969 Chevy Camaro that he spent many years restoring. Bob was incredibly generous with his time and talents and could always be counted on to help friends, neighbors and family.

Bob is survived by his sister, Jeanette Thompson; niece, Meredith Thompson (Andrew) Alspach and her children, Jack and Madison; nephew, Scott (Elizabeth) Thompson and his son, Max, several cousins and dear friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles and a beloved cousin, Judith Donald.
