Phyllis Jean (Baker) Manitz

May 25, 1929 ~ April 29, 2018 (age 88)

Phyllis Jean Manitz, 88, of Alpena passed away peacefully Sunday, April 29, 2018, surrounded by her family at Bickford of Saginaw Township Assisted Living.

Phyllis Jean Baker was born May 25, 1929, in Rogers City to the late Charles and Sophia (Kline) Baker. On November 22, 1951, she married her soul mate, George Manitz. He preceded her in death on January 17, 2001. Phyllis was a teacher in Alpena Public Schools for 30 years with a majority of those years teaching kindergarten at Lincoln School.  Phyllis retired in 1985. She was an active member at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Besser Museum, Friends of the Library, Thunder Bay Art Council, and founded the Chapter 8 Book Club.

Surviving are her two children, Joie (Paul) Truchan, Chuck (Rose) Manitz; three grandchildren, Abby (Nicholas) Piazza; Jessica (Steve) Singer, Brian (Diana) Manitz,

Five great grandchildren, Liliana & Adelyn Piazza and Camryn, Jackson & Logan Singer; as well as countless friends that became part of her family, especially Marj Brandenburg and Dolly Zeller. 

Mrs. Manitz was preceded in death by her grandson, Steven Manitz.

Memorial visitation will be held at First Congregational United Church of Christ on Saturday, May 5, from 10 a.m. until the memorial service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Robert Case officiating.
