Leonard A. Johnsen

July 19, 1937 ~ July 30, 2018 (age 81)

Leonard A. Johnsen, 81, of Alpena passed away Monday, July 30, 2018, at his home.

Leonard was born July 19, 1937, in Marinette, Wisconsin to the late Arthur and Marie (Wick) Johnsen. On September 23, 1961, he married Carol Werth. Leonard served in the United States Air Force and worked at Abitibi, retiring in 1998. He was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, life member of American Legion Post 65 and a past commander, Am Vets, Civil Air Patrol, Alpena County Emergency Services Coordinator for many years, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Amateur Radio, honorary member of Alpena V.F.W. Post 2496, Air Force Association, and Yankee Air Force.

Leonard worked hard providing for his beloved family. He delighted in Great Lakes Maritime shipping history, Alpena history, and was passionate about serving his community. Leonard also enjoyed camping and woodworking.

Surviving are his wife, Carol; four children, Connie Frary, A.L. Johnsen, Ralph Johnsen, Roger (Trayse) Johnsen; 2 grandchildren, Aaron (Clarissa) Johnsen, Donovan Johnsen; 2 great grandchildren, Xochitl, Bayani; brother, Palmer Johnsen; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Johnsen was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Stephen Dybas; and sister, Elaine Rockwood.

Visitation will take place at Bannan Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4-8:00 p.m. with military honors at 5 p.m. by Alpena V.F.W. Post 2496. Visitation will continue there on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Phil Phifer and Rev. Charles Price officiating.
