Julie Ann Smith-Mandrick, 63, of Alpena passed away Saturday, March 30, 2019 at MidMichigan Medical Center – Alpena following a short illness.

Julie Ann Sabelhaus was born in Detroit on April 24, 1955 to Kermit and Shirley (Mundt) Sabelhaus.  She possessed a bachelor’s degree in Family Life Education from Spring Arbor University and had attended Central Michigan University.  On September 26, 2009 she married Michael Mandrick.

She recently retired from NEMCSA as an area manager of Early Head Start.  She was just learning to be retired having embraced numerous opportunities to teach and practice yoga in the Alpena Community.  Julie had previously worked at Hope House, Tendercare, Alpena Public Schools and for several years ran Little Friends daycare from her home.  Her life, besides the late enthusiasm of yoga, was always centered around children.  Besides her working life with young children she absolutely adored her own grandchildren.  Her enthusiasm in this area knew few bounds.  She enjoyed numerous friend circles such as the wine ladies of the Courtyard, the groups of Latitudes, a book club and the numerous yoga practitioners in Alpena.  She taught yoga at Higher Vibrations in Maggie’s Yoga Room and at Bella Rose.  In her earlier life she was a part of the Alpena sailing community.

Surviving are her husband, Michael; 3 children, Shannon Robin, Erik (Erin) Smith, Elizabeth (Kevin) Skiba; grandchildren, Gabriella, Patrick, Fitch, Isabel, Keller, Gus; her mother, Shirley Sabelhaus; siblings, Martha (Jim) Fisher, Paul (Debbie) Sabelhaus, Joseph (Amanda) Sabelhaus, Dean (Julie) Sabelhaus; 9 nieces and nephews.

Julie was preceded in death by her father, Kermit Sabelhaus and son-in-law, Steven Robin.

Visitation will take place at the Bannan Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2 – 8 p.m. and will continue at Grace Lutheran Church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Thomas Orth officiating.
