Chester Enid (Farrier) Frederick

May 15, 1920 ~ September 1, 2018 (age 98)

Chester Enid Frederick, 98, died on September 1, 2018. She was born on May 15, 1920 to Chester Edward Farrier and Elizabeth (Tibbie) Ellen Rea, in Alpena, MI. She was born two months after her father died of the Spanish Flu so her mother named her Chester in his memory. This was a gesture that provided many laughs and some confusion throughout her life, as a girl named Chester. Enid was fond of telling everyone that she had a wonderful life and that growing up fatherless, through The Great Depression and World War II never dampened her enthusiasm and joy in everything she did.

Though born in Alpena she lived her early years in Hillman and Ypsilanti. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Ypsilanti in 1937 and attended one year of college at Michigan State Normal College (EMU). In 1940 she moved to Alpena with her mother. She held many jobs during her life, all of which she thoroughly enjoyed, including working at Zwergle’s Bookstore and Candy shop in Ypsilanti, in the finishing room at Fletcher Paper Company, and as secretary to the financial officer and chief engineer at Besser Manufacturing. Enid married Andrew Joseph Frederick in 1946 and quit working for a time to raise her three children. She returned to the workforce in 1953 as church secretary at Trinity Episcopal Church. In 1960, she went to work for the Alpena Public Schools as secretary to Herb Fox, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction. She worked in this capacity for five different Assistant Superintendents, retiring in 1983 while working for Bruce Connon.

Enid was an avid reader all her life, a fine artist, maker of award winning quilts and an intrepid traveler. She loved cats, especially her Siamese cats, Chic, Chic II and Tippie. Actively involved in Trinity Episcopal Church most of her adult life, she was co-founder of the annual Victorian Tea. She was renowned for the delicious sandwich loaves she made, and the fine tea she brewed. Enid was a rare person and those who knew her loved her; she accepted everyone on their own merits.

She was preceded in death by her father (1920), her mother (1983), her husband (1994) and her sister Lucille Farrier Stickel (2007). She is survived by her three children Andrew (Deborah) Frederick, James Frederick and Carol (Tim Travis) Frederick, four nieces and many cousins.

A memorial service will be held on September 22 at Noon at Trinity Episcopal Church in Alpena. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Church or the Huron Humane Society. Arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home.
