Charles Douglas Attwell

August 18, 1927 ~ February 12, 2018 (age 90)

Charles “Chuck” Douglas Attwell, 90, died suddenly on Monday, February 12, 2018 at their winter home at Rice Creek RV Resort in Riverview, Florida.  He had played 18 holes of golf that morning with a score of 95.

Chuck was born to the late Charles and Mildred (Barber) Attwell and raised in Detroit, Michigan; remembering that he had to go home for dinner when the streetlights came on at night.  His family always vacationed in the Hale area and his parents later retired there.  After high school, Chuck served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Leyte.  Following his military service, he returned to Hale and there met his first wife Regina (“Shelly”) Shellenbarger with whom he had two children — Steve (Sue) Attwell and Shelly (Wayne) Wilson.  They have 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  They will miss him in their lives.  Shelly preceded Chuck in death in April 1994. He is also survived by two brothers, Harold Attwell and Henry Attwell and their families. Chuck’s career was at Abitibi from its initial opening until his retirement.

In October 1995, he married his long-time friend Beverly Kihn Attwell and she survives him as do her children Bonnie (Loren) Urlaub and Kristi (Steve) Poel; 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren who also will miss him.

Chuck was a gifted athlete, playing hockey and softball as a young man.  He enjoyed watching all sports — live and on TV, reading newspapers and novels, completing crossword puzzles, playing cards, trivia, participating in Sr. Olympics, bowling— he scored the first 300 game recorded in Alpena, horseshoes, and most of all—golf!  He had a hole in one and often golfed his age. He was a member of the Alpena Moose Lodge, Boosters Club, and a past member of the Alpena Golf Course Board.

A celebration of his life service will be held Sunday, February 18 at 2 PM in Rice Creek and another memorial service will be held later in the Spring in Alpena.  Burial will be in Hale.    In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to your favorite charity.  Cremation arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home.
