Borden Hays Baumgartel

July 1, 1922 ~ February 2, 2019 (age 96)

Borden Hays Baumgartel, Jr., 96, of Hillman passed away Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Hillman’s Haven AFC Home.

Borden was born in Louisville, Kentucky on July 1, 1922 to the late Borden and Mable (Pittman) Baumgartel.  He served as a fighter pilot in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII and retired from General Motors in 1984.  On March 25, 1941 he married Doris McGrath and later married Bette Jean Elwell on April 13, 1950.  In the 1960’s, he hosted “The Bob Hays Show” on WEXL Radio in Detroit and was an accomplished musician. Bette preceded him in death on October 15, 1983.  On May 12, 1984, he remarried Doris.  She also preceded him in death on November 14, 2014.  He enjoyed 30 years of retirement in Arizona, playing golf and spending time with friends.

Surviving are six children, Diana (Joe) Wilcox, Robert (Rebecca) Baumgartel, Judy (Larry) Jankauski, Zoe (Howard) Marcus, Jill Baumgartel, Wendy (Jeffrey) Gibler; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren.

Mr. Baumgartel was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynn Hays Baumgartel; two grandsons, Ryan Baumgartel, Matthew Jankauski; brother, John Borden; and a sister, Alma Howes.

Cremation arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home. 

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
