Welcome to the memorial page for

Marie T. (Gapske) Deno

June 26, 1923 ~ August 24, 2017 (age 94)

Marie Deno passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Turning Brook Retirement Community.  She was 94 years young.

Marie T. Gapske was born June 26, 1923 in Alpena to the late Henry and Alta Gapske.

She married Eugene “Skeets” Deno on August 11, 1945 at St. Bernard’s Church.  They were happily married for 62 years.   Skeets preceded Marie in death on February 4, 2008.

Marie was a lifelong volunteer, a community connector, and a successful businesswoman.  Most importantly, she was a loving and dedicated mother of nine children.  Over the past several years she and Skeets delighted in their ever-growing family of 22 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.  Marie was never without a hand-picked surprise for her grandchildren when they came to visit her.

In Marie’s early years she was a nurse’s aid during WWII.  Knowing additional help was needed during the war, she volunteered at the hospital after her workday, making beds, bathing patients and changing sheets.  She went on to become a Charter Member of Alpena Regional Medical Center’s (ARMC) Hospital Auxiliary, a volunteer run organization, which helped raise funds for necessary medical equipment.  Volunteerism became constant theme with Marie, spanning her entire life.  Her dedication to her community was evident in the many ways she found to get involved, always coming up with creative new ways to fundraise.

Marie created the Hospital Auxiliary’s annual Koeze Nut Fundraiser, and during the 18 years she ran the event, became known as “The Nut Lady”, selling over $200,000 of nuts to benefit the hospital.  Subsequently, her creation of the Used Book Sale, which she co-chaired for over 10 years, continues to this day to bring in much-needed funds.

Other community involvement and honors include: Alpena Hospital Auxiliary President, and Volunteer of the Year; Volunteer Program Manager of Lifeline Services; 30+ year Charter Member of The Zonta Club; Chamber of Commerce ‘1995 Citizen of the Year’; Zonta Club ‘2009 Woman of the Year’, recognizing her more than 35 years of volunteer service to a variety of causes in Alpena; Eucharistic Minister at St. Bernard’s Church; Member - Board of Directors, Alpena Country Club; President Alpena Country Club Women’s Association

Marie had a long and successful career in banking at Alpena Savings and First of America Banks until she retired in 1991.  Over her 28 years, she worked in many capacities beginning as a teller and moving up through the ranks to Assistant Vice President of Business Development, where she became one of the first recipients of the James Duncan Award for Performance Excellence.   Her final role at the bank also allowed her to reach out to the community --- a role she relished and an act that was second nature to her.

After her retirement, Marie took on another community-serving role as Program Manager for Lifeline Emergency Services through the Alpena Regional Medical Center, a role in which she happily served until she was in her 90’s.

Marie also enjoyed playing golf and cards with Skeets and her friends. She loved reading and had a special passion for going to the Casino.

Surviving are her children, Carol Kimball, Nan Katzenberger, Mari (Jon) Crow, Jeanne (David) Ellis, Susan (Jeff) Hanthorn, Kathi (Tim) Ridner, Jerry Deno; daughter-in-law Nancy Deno; 22 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and sister Carol (Don) Lightner, sisters-in-laws Joyce Gapske, and Myra Gapske , and brother-in-law, Arnie Kindt.

Mrs. Deno was preceded in death by her sons, Jon Deno, Rob Deno, and son-in-law, Bill Katzenberger. brothers, Jack Gapske, Jimmy Gapske, Jerry Gapske, and sisters, Margie Ruell and Irma Kindt.
