Donald Joseph Homant

February 9, 1935 ~ January 21, 2018 (age 82)

Donald Joseph Homant passed away on Sunday, January 21. He was 82 years old.

Donald was born to the late Lemuel and Ruth (Bailey) Homant in Petoskey, Michigan on February 9, 1935. His family moved to Alpena when he was a young boy. He graduated from Alpena Catholic Central in 1953 where he was a standout athlete. He joined the United States Army in 1954 and served two years in France. This is where he met his former wife Odette Riquez. They moved to Alpena where they raised their five children.  Donald worked for his father at Doyle Distributing and eventually took over the business after his father passed away.  He eventually sold the business in the eighties. He went on to work for Crittenden Construction for many years.  Don’s grandchildren loved going to “Bumps” home on the lake. The family has many fond memories of summer days swimming, playing cards and enjoying life together.  Besides family, Don loved college basketball, was a voracious reader, avid outdoorsman and dedicated crossword puzzle enthusiast. All of these loves he passed on to his children.

He is survived by his five children, Cynthia (Michael Turisk) Homant, Paulette (Andrew) Cruise, Marc (Suzette) Homant, Michelle (Dennis Heimbrodt, Jr) White and Suzanne (Jeffrey Diethelm) Homant. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Donald has three surviving sisters Marjorie Matteson, Marilyn Semones and Bonnie (Gary) St. Charles. He also is survived by his former wife Odette Homant.

He is preceded in death by his brothers, James and William Homant. 

His children loved him dearly and their hearts are heavy with sadness.

A celebration of his life will take place this summer. 

Cremation arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home.
