Algene Audrey (Reece) Gruschke

April 5, 1935 ~ February 19, 2018 (age 82)

Algene Audrey Gruschke, 82, of Alpena passed away Monday, February 19, 2018, at Sally’s Care Home.

Algene Reece was born April 5, 1935, in Phillipsburg, Kansas to the late Merritt and Violet (Gusler) Reece. On October 31, 1953, she married Gerald Gruschke. He preceded her in death on February 26, 1994. Algene worked at Hanner’s IGA as a meat cutter for many years, and later as a caregiver to Mr. Ed Hanner, who had a massive stroke until his death.  She was well known for her beautiful quilts, especially her baby quilts.  She enjoyed her little hobby farm, her huge vegetable garden, which she loved to share with family and friends, but most importantly spending time with her family especially the grandchildren.  She was an active member of Alpena Free Methodist Church.

Surviving are her four children, Gerry (Len) Tolan, Chuck (Karen) Gruschke, Marty Gruschke, Darek Gruschke; 8 grandchildren, Missy (Matt) Halleck, Nichole (Clint) Howard, Alison (Chris) Mumford, Shawn Gruschke, Shannon Gruschke, Jordan Gruschke, Aleia Gruschke, Deanna Gruschke; 12 great grandchildren; brother, Arlyn (Patricia) Reece; sister Dixie (Wes) Snider; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Gruschke was preceded in death by her two sons, Greg and Randy; grandsons, Aaron, Jeff; sister, Elaine Beauchamp; five brothers, Leon, Wayne, Theron, Eldon, Keith; and infant sister, Arlene Reece.

Memorial visitation will take place at Alpena Free Methodist Church on Saturday, March 10, from 10:30 a.m. until the memorial service at 12 p.m. with Rev. Richard George officiating.  Cremation arrangements are being handled by the Bannan Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Alpena Free Methodist Church.
