Robert “Bob” Hayka, age 85, of Herron, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at Medilodge of Hillman.
Robert was born on July 30, 1927 to the late John and Josephine (Beland) Hayka in Alpena. On August 2, 1947, he married Ilene Frances Hodgins. The couple previously owned and operated Alpena Concrete Septic Tank Works and manufactured concrete septic tanks, sold, installed plumbing and drainage supplies. Bob was employed at Huron Portland Cement Company and National Gypsum for 39 years. He also worked for the Steelworkers Carpenters Union at various locations around Michigan. Mr. Hayka was very involved in 4-H and Boy Scouts for many years. He was a member of the Word of Life Baptist Church and the Berean Class. Bob enjoyed spending time outdoors and especially looked forward to deer and turkey hunting. He went mule deer hunting twice in Wyoming with his cement plant buddies and brought back a mule deer both times.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Ilene; eight children, Bob (Jean) Hayka of Lachine, Douglas (Joyce) Hayka of Alpena, Jerry (Diane) Hayka of Lachine, James (Linda) Hayka of Herron, Sally (Greg) Nesmith of Louisiana, Sarah (Bill) Ross of Lachine, John (Dana) Hayka of Herron, Ed Hayka of Alpena; eighteen grandchildren, Stacy, David, Andrew, Aimee, Jodee, Kerry, Troy, Tyler, Carter, Luke, Sarah, Brittni, Nicole, Ty, Marissa, Morgan, John Michael, Kaitlyn; seven great-grandchildren, Jessica, Heather, Daniel, Luke, Benjamin, Levi, Mason; special niece, Carolyn Arnold Thatcher of Maryland; and a very dedicated friend, Leonard Wieczorkowski of Lachine.
Mr. Hayka was preceded in death by six siblings, Genevieve Strassburg, Florence Arnold, Clarence Hayka, Delima Cook, Cecilia Hayka and John “Jack” Hayka.
Visitation for Mr. Hayka will take place on Wednesday at the Word of Life Baptist Church on Bagley Street from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service at 12 noon with Rev. Scott Joy and Rev. Jacob Ehman officiating. Arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home.
Interment: Long Rapids Cemetery
