Edward J. Stanek

Edward J. Stanek, 94, of Alpena, passed away in Buffalo, New York on Wednesday, July 11, 2012.

Edward J. Stanek was born January 1, 1918 to Albert and Clara (Divis) Stanek in Jordan Township near East Jordan, Michigan.  He served in the Army during World War II in New Guinea, the Philippines and South Korea and was discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1946.

Edward was an auto body repairman who worked at Perry Sales in Petoskey and then set up his own garage and filling station in Charlevoix.  In 1959, he went to work for Schultz Chevrolet in Alpena and managed their body shop until his retirement in 1979.  After retiring, Ed went to work for Auto Appraisers out of Saginaw and worked there until he was 83 and the company went out of business.  He then worked at Wal-Mart as a greeter until 2008 when he was 91 years old.

Edward was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.  He was also a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Club.

Edward is survived by his wife, Beverly Z. (Zoe) Stanek; daughters, Charlotte Williams (Lloyd), Annette Leopard (Robert), and Valerie Stanek (Moon-Hyun Chu).  He is also survived by eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Frances Vert, Emma Perkett and Helen Anzell.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Beverly Carstens (Aldor); two   brothers, Albert and Clement; and his sisters, Bertha Stanek, Clara Jaroneski and Alice Gregson.

Memorial visitation will be Sunday, July 22, 2012, at the Bannan Funeral Home from 2-8 p.m., with full military honors accorded him by VFW Alpena Post 2496 at 6 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m.   Memorial visitation will continue Monday at St. Bernard Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until the time of the memorial mass at 11:00 a.m. with Monsignor Paul Russell officiating.
