Lawrence "Larry" E. Hubert passed away peacefully in his sleep, with his wife Clara at his side, on Saturday, May 10, 2008, at the Midland home of his daughter and son-in-law, Jean (Hubert) Willis and James Willis.
Larry was born on August 26, 1925, in Ossineke, Michigan, the son of the late Edward and Alice (St. Lawrence) Hubert. Larry graduated from Alpena High School and served in the U.S. Army in the World War II European Theater. Larry and Clara (Paul) were married on October 29, 1949, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Alpena with the Right Rev. Monsignor John E. Gatzke officiating. Larry was employed by the Besser Company for 20 years and Abitibi Corp. for 20 years, when he retired in 1987. Larry was an avid sportsman and outdoors man. He enjoyed all sports, and, as a young man, he was a baseball player in the County League. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, woodworking, and walking in the woods. As a younger man, he was awarded a number of trophies for golfing, bowling, and marksmanship. His early years in farming led to his love of vegetable gardening.
Since 1962, Larry and Clara enjoyed their summers at Grand Lake with daughter Jeannie, and they shared several enjoyable winters in South Texas and Islamorada, Florida. Larry was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Alpena and a life member of the Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree, Alpena Chapter, Council 529. Larry is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Clara; his adoring daughter Jean (Jeannie Willis); his son-in-law and best friend James (Jim) Willis; his sister Hazel LaBonte; his nieces and nephews; and his friends in Alpena and Midland. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Alice Hubert, and his brother Rodney Hubert.
Larry's family will receive family and friends at the Bannan Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2 - 8 p.m. with a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church from 11 a.m. until time of service at 12 noon with Rev. Greg McCallum officiating. Full military honors will be accorded him at Holy Cross Cemetery by VFW Alpena Post 2496.
