Nicodem "Nick" Gryniewicz, 86, of 1116 Merchant Street, Alpena, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2007, at Providence Hospital in Southfield.

Nick was born in Posen on September 15, 1921 to Anthony and Catherine (Walczyk) Gryniewicz and served in the U.S. Army  during WWII in the 10th Armored Division in France.  On December 28, 1946 he married Anna Helkowski at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Posen.  She preceded him in death on June 21, 1985.

Nick retired from work at Alpena Optical.   He enjoyed working on area bingos for several decades.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and an active participant of Alpena Senior Citizens.  Nick was also an active and  life member of K of C, 4th degree , VFW, DAV, American Legion, Cooties, and Military Order of Purple Heart.

Surviving are 3  daughters:  Nancy (Michael) McDonald of Anderson, Indiana, Marcia (Mark) Karpinski of Traverse City, Judy (Arlin) Gehrke of Farmington Hills; 7 grandchildren:  Scott (Holly) McDonald, Christina (Alan) Beck, Heather, Amanda, and Luke Gehrke, Sara and Adam Karpinski; 1 great-grandchild, Nathaniel Beck; 1 brother, Ted; 1 sister, Lucy (Dan) Skowronek; brother-in-law, Frank Grajewski; and sister-in-law, Helen Gryniewicz.

Preceding him in death were his son, Dennis, on December 30, 1954; 6 brothers:  John, Julius, Ed, Alex, Adam, and Harry; and a sister, Genevieve Grajewski.

Mr. Gryniewicz is at the Bannan Funeral Home where friends may call Sunday  1-8 p.m.  with a parish prayer service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral services at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Greg McCallum officiating.  Military honors will be accorded him by VFW Alpena Post 2496 at the cemetery.  On-line condolences may be registered at www.bannanfuneralhome.com.
