Alfred Daniel Corthals, 82, of 1417 Tamrack Road, Alpena, passed away Monday, August 25, 2008, at Alpena Regional Medical Center.

Alfred was born in Alpena on December 4, 1925 to the late Rudolph and Florence (Ryan) Corthals and served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. On April 12, 1947 he married the former Theresa Sobczak at St. Mary Catholic Church in Alpena; she preceded him in death on April 26, 1990. On January 11, 1992 in Alpena, he married Mary Ann Kaiser. Mr. Corthals had been employed at Fletcher Paper Company for 42 years and retired in 1987. He enjoyed carpentry work and farming.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, and the V.F.W. Post 2496.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann; 5 daughters, Kathie "Sue" Goudy of Fenton, Peggy and Charles Bates of Alpena, Mary Jane and Dennis Partlo of Alpena, Cindy Sucharski of Alpena, Denise and Robert Downing of Alpena; 2 sons, Mike of Alpena and Mark and Linda of Florida; 6 stepchildren, Michael Kaiser, Patrick and Gail Kaiser, William Kaiser, Brenda and Louis Donajkowski, Craig and Deborah Kaiser, Tamara and Daniel Leeck; 14 grandchildren, Brian Goudy, Sarah Jagst, Andy Partlo, Matt Partlo, Stacy Corthals, Dana Corthals, Angela Samp, Ronda Kinzey, Ryan Scheske, Kim Duncan, Jeremy Scheske, Tiffany Sucharski, Christina Sucharski, Tressa Downing; 12 step-grandchildren;12 great-grandchildren; 5 step-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Alice Strzelecki and Frances (Mrs. Ed) LaGault, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceding him in death were his brother, Eli Corthals; 2 sisters, Kathleen Kalish, Evelyn Corthals; 2 grandchildren, Eric and Josh Spicer; and son-in-law, Ronald Scheske.

Mr. Corthals is at the Bannan Funeral Home where family and friends may call on Thursday from 2 - 8 p.m. where a military service will be held at 6:00 p.m. followed by a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Friday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Patrick Maher officiating.
