Maxine Coombs, 86, of Ossineke, passed away at Alpena Regional Medical Center on Friday, July 11, 2008.

Maxine was born in Haynes Twp. on August 9, 1921, to Elsie Campbell and adopted by John Campbell. On November 8, 1941, she married Ellwood Coombs, and he preceded her in death on October 2, 1984. Mrs. Coombs earned her bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University and her master's degree from the University of Michigan. She was a public school teacher in Hillman and Alpena, retiring from Alpena Community College in 1978. Mrs. Coombs was the first principal at Sanborn School.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel.

Surviving are her daughter, Marie Coombs of Farmington Hills; her son Dr. Robert and wife Nancy of Alpena; and 2 grandchildren, Laura and Charles.

Mrs. Coombs is at the Bannan Funeral Home where friends may call on Sunday from 2-6 p.m. Visitation will continue at the First Presbyterian Church on Monday from 10 until time of service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Steven Hammond officiating.
